I have an idea. Let’s trade Trump to Putin in exchange for Edward Snowden.

Then pardon Snowden.

I was going to tell Mamie to BE MINE but then I remembered owning people is wrong and making strict demands isn’t conducive to a healthy relationship and besides that’s kind of greedy.

So I am making a nice dinner instead.

The (second) sacking of Michael Flynn is good news. Russian impropriety aside, he is an ugly, hateful Islamaphobe and he should never have been given a title that suggested his views were acceptable.

Sophie and I are shopping for pants for her which is a hoot because neither of us have any clue what we’re doing. How the heck can she be either a 4 or a 29?! And why are there no lengths?

I think I’m just going to buy her boy pants where the sizes make sense.

Those who have wrought great changes in the world never succeeded by gaining over chiefs; but always by exciting the multitude. The first is the resource of intrigue and produces only secondary results, the second is the resort of genius and transforms the universe. Martin Van Buren (who, incidentally, never really managed to excite any multitudes…)

Fun Fact: From 1836 through 1844 it was against the rules in the House of Representatives to discuss, debate, or consider anti-slavery petitions.

This is widely considered a violation of the first amendment, specifically “the right of the people…to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

The nation…has no right to expect that it will always have wise and humane rulers, sincerely attached to the principles of the Constitution. Wicked men, ambitious of power, with hatred of liberty and contempt of law, may fill the place once occupied by Washington and Lincoln. Supreme Court Justice David Davis, 1866

I’ve already had two people question why I oppose Trump’s Muslim ban if I never complained when Obama banned refugees for six months. Sigh.

FaceBook icon

It is a terrible shame, in the midst of all the fallout from the Muslim ban, that Trump’s first military operation killed the innocent child of a terrorist. Obviously that wasn’t the intent but I assure you our enemies will recall that Trump promised to do exactly that while campaigning. We’re making ISIS’s job easier.

Words matter.

New rule: If Trump publicly picks a petty fight with someone, they have the right to meet him in hand to hand combat.

How I use Caller ID: If I don’t recognize the area code I don’t answer. If it is a Phoenix area code I assume it is someone who wants to talk to me, which is never fun, so I don’t answer. If it is a California area code I assume it is someone from work who, frankly, should be emailing me, so I don’t answer. If it is any other area code I’m paralyzed with indecision and end up not answering. Read more…

I’m no political strategist (far far from it) but honestly I’d like the dems to just vote on Gorsuch’s record and qualifications and not play games. Demonstrate how grownups behave. Yes, the Republicans blocked and blocked and even threatened to block Hillary’s nominations for four years. And yes McConnell has zero credibility. But: I’m not sure it does the nation any good to use the worst behavior of the Republicans over the last 8 years as a template moving forward. Read more…

Our immigration policy is now racists, we’ve turned our backs on refugees entirely, our president sets the standard for meanness, the KKK is dancing with joy, ISIS is running ads reminding potential radicals that the USA is actively at war with Islam itself (and they’re not wrong…), the national security council is now politicized and crippled, the state department is in shambles, the park service is in open rebellion, and the Queen of England is probably planning to feign a cold to avoid having to shake our president’s tiny little hand… Read more…

Credit where credit is due. It’s a small thing but the first thing I’ve seen where Trump has made the right and humane decision. And considering the reports of and draft language from a possible reversal order, and Pence’s widely recognized abhorrent positions on LGBT issues, it seems likely it was Trump himself that pushed this outcome. I also think there’s a reasonable chance the clear voice of the American people protesting over the last two weeks helped ensure this decision. Read more…

Recipe for Destruction

Spitballing here. There’s definitely a speculative conspiratorial undercurrent here for which I apologize.

  • “Lenin wanted to destroy the state, and that’s my goal too. I want to bring everything crashing down, and destroy all of today’s establishment.”

    Steve Bannon

  • “What joins men together is not the sharing of bread but the sharing of enemies.”

The Judge from Cormac McCarthy’s “Blood Meridian”

  • 1. Foment muslim extremism and terrorist recruiting and financing efforts through targeted anti-Islamic rhetoric.

  • 2. Act to ban immigration in a way that agrees with anti-Islam rhetoric while maintaining an air of legality.

  • 3. In so doing, establish an adversarial relationship with congress and the courts on the issue of immigration.

  • 4. Undermine the Central Intelligence Agency by casting doubt on their efficacy.

  • 5. Undermine the Department of Homeland Security by breaking down lines of communication.

  • 6. Undermine the Department of State by disrupting leadership and diplomatic missions.

  • 7. Undermine anti-terrorist efforts by breaking down lines of communication and cooperation through the above actions.

(Recall that this poor interdepartmental coordination was the primary failing of our intelligence systems pre-9/11 resulting in the establishment of DHS in the first place.)

    1. Undermine trust in the media, fact-based reporting, and the “political establishment”.

  • 9. Wait.

  • 10. When a major terrorist attack happens, pin it on lax immigration policy.

  • 11. Consolidate executive power with a new political mandate fueled by the above.

I guess it costs the American taxpayers about $1.5 billion a year to house, feed, clothe, and transport the president and his family. And apparently it costs about $65,000 over five years to resettle and establish a single refugee family. So here’s an idea…just throwing this out there: Let’s accept 100,000 refugees a year and ban Trump from entering the country instead. We can spend the leftover savings on a really nice inflatable president doll. Read more…
