The AcropolisGeoff Coffey14 March 2018 Photosflickrgreece-2018Selfie with Athens behind from the foot of the Acropolis.“Hey Sophie, do a little performance for us” at the Theater of Dionysus.Little chair in the theater.Look at all the little marble chairs!Mamie with the Roman-built Odeon behind. The Odeon itself (not the wall you see behind but the seats and stage) was reconstructed in the 1950s and it’s used for performances today. Here it is. The Parthenon.Let’s get a closer look. From the best lookout spot on the Acropolis. You can see the Temple of Zeus way back there. We were there yesterday looking up at the Parthenon. The Erechtheion, temple to Athena and Poseidon right next to the Parthenon (which is the temple to the Virgin Athena). The Caryatids, six young maidens who hold up the roof of the porch. (These are replicas. Five of the originals are in the museum and pictured below. One is in the British Museum, having been “acquired” by who the book called “sticky fingered Lord Elgin”.)The Temple of Athena Nike also near the Parthenon. This one honors Athena’s assistance of Athens in war.The pedestal of the statue of Agrippa. Marc Antony put a statue of himself and Cleopatra up there at one point. Sophia’s interesting in posing for photographs is waning. From atop the Acropolis we can see the Temple of Hephaestus way down on the Agora. I hope we make it there tomorrow. The ancient Greeks weren’t big on spaces. My sweeties on the other side of the wall before the Odeon.Said wall. Built by the Romans.
